What is “Documentary” Wedding Photography???

Philly Documentary Wedding

As someone that’s been in the wedding industry for nearly ten years, I’ve seen trends and patterns over the years, buzz words, and the like. However, nothing has gripped the industry quite like the word, “documentary.” But nothing is truly as timeless as authentic documentation. The definition of documentary is, “consisting of official pieces of written, printed, or other matter." Remaining unobtrusive and truthful is the goal of any self-proclaimed documentary photographer and a process I practice.

Something I often hear from clients is, “I like that you take a candid approach. We are awkward in front of the camera.” To which I say, everyone is awkward in front of the camera and that’s nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of. This is my profession and even I feel uncomfortable when I’m on the other side! However, to make your photos truly documentary, the key is to actually make time for the candid moments. I can come with poses and prompts to get you moving for the “formal” portrait session, but when it comes to the bulk of your day, here are a few ideas that make for great candid moments:

  • Sharing a drink or cigar with your bridal party and/or family

  • Doing first-looks with parents, siblings, bridal party, or soon-to-be spouse

  • Sharing private vows

  • Being at your cocktail hour (this seems obvious but a lot of people skip out on this part of the day)

  • Private toasts or sharing of well-wishes from the bridal party or family before the ceremony (if you’re not doing a first look, each party can do this separately)

  • For those that are religious, sharing a prayer

  • Reading letters or opening a gift from your soon-to-be spouse

  • Doing a post-ceremony exit (flower petals, streamers, bubbles, etc.) or receiving line

  • Getting ready with your soon-to-be spouse

  • Letting yourself be emotional, feel your day, and be in the moment

These are just some ideas but every wedding, couple, and family will be different. I’m not implying that you should force these big, emotional moments, but inserting time to breathe, be with your people, and just enjoy your day while surrounded by those you love is the best way to naturally let the day unfold.

Is this the style you’re looking for? If so, let’s talk details!
